Knob Pin Hinges
Sometimes known simply as pin hinges, these are designed in much
the same way as most regular butt hinges. The only difference
is that the pin extends out from the knuckles, where it is topped
off at each end with a decorative knob. Most knob pin hinges are
made from brass. However, some are made from blued steel, with
the visible part of the hinge being fretted and chased with decorative
motifs. Hinges of this type look good cm heavy, ornate interior
wood doors-the sort of fancy doors you see in grand houses.
Knobs and Handles
Wood Doors are fitted with all manner of knobs and handles: bridge-shaped
handles made from forged iron, turned wooden knobs, iron rings
mounted on rose plates, integral pull and knocker handles, ball
shaped brass knobs, egg-shaped glass knobs, ceramic knobs, and
many other designs. If you are looking for a special knob, visit
an architectural salvage company and search out an old item. You
can't beat some of the handles and knobs that were made a hundred
or so years ago. If you do intend to use old fittings, make sure
that they are complete and sound. Pay particular attention to
the spindle, the rose that fits on the spindle between the door
and the knob or handle, and the little grub (or worm) screw that
fixes the handle to the spindle (see the illustration of the rim
lock).
Lock rail
The horizontal rail of a framed and paneled door on which the
lock is fitted.
Ledged Doors
Ledged doors are traditionally used for workshops, outbuildings,
and lean-to sheds. They are the simplest form of doors. In essence,
they consist of a series of vertical battens about 7/8 to I inch
thick and 4 to 5 inches wide that are nailed to three horizontal
boards or cross ledges about 1 1/2 inches thick and 6 to 9 inches
wide. The battens may be square, chamfered, tongued and grooved,
ploughed and tongued, or even cross-tongued. Although this type
of door is an easy to make,
